How it Works
The French pension system is a pay-as-you-go model with two pillars: the basic Social Security scheme and mandatory supplementary schemes (AGIRC-ARRCO for private-sector employees). The basic pension is calculated from the average annual salary (SAM), the liquidation rate, and the insurance duration.
The maximum liquidation rate is 50% (full rate). It is achieved when the insured person has accumulated the required number of quarters for their generation — 172 quarters for those born from 1973 onward. Missing quarters trigger a décote of 0.625% per quarter, reducing the rate. Conversely, each additional quarter beyond the full rate earns a surcote of 1.25%.
The AGIRC-ARRCO supplementary pension works on a points basis. Contributions made throughout the career are converted into points, whose value is set each year. Our simulator provides a simplified estimate representing approximately 30% of the basic pension.
This simulator lets you anticipate your future pension amount by adjusting your personal parameters. It serves as an educational tool to understand French retirement mechanics and assess the impact of your departure age on your pension level.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the French basic pension calculated?
Basic pension = SAM (average annual salary of the best 25 years, capped at the PASS) x liquidation rate x (contributed quarters / required quarters). The full rate is 50%, reduced by a décote if quarters are insufficient.
How many quarters are needed for a full-rate pension?
For people born from 1973 onward, 172 quarters (43 years of contributions) are required. This number varies by birth year for earlier generations.
What are décote and surcote?
The décote reduces the liquidation rate by 0.625% per missing quarter (minimum 37.5%). The surcote increases it by 1.25% per extra quarter beyond the full rate, with no cap.
At what age can you retire in France?
The legal retirement age is 64 since the 2023 reform (for those born from 1968 onward). Early retirement is possible under certain conditions (long career, disability, hardship).
Is this simulator accurate?
It provides a simplified estimate. The actual calculation depends on your complete career record, the schemes you contributed to, and many individual factors. Visit info-retraite.fr for an official simulation.
