How it Works
Our income tax calculator computes progressive income tax for seven European countries with a detailed bracket-by-bracket breakdown. Enter your taxable income and select a country to see exactly how much tax falls in each bracket, your total liability, effective rate, and marginal rate.
Progressive taxation means that higher income is taxed at higher rates, but only the income within each bracket is subject to that bracket’s rate. This is a common misconception — moving into a higher tax bracket does not increase tax on your lower income.
The bracket breakdown table shows the exact amount taxed in each range and the resulting tax, giving you full transparency into how your income tax is computed. The effective rate tells you the true overall percentage of your income going to tax.
Use this calculator alongside our Salary Calculator for a complete view including social contributions, or our Capital Gains Calculator for investment income taxation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate?
The effective tax rate is your total tax divided by total income — it's what you actually pay overall. The marginal rate is the rate on your last euro of income — the bracket you're currently in.
How do progressive tax brackets work?
In a progressive system, each bracket only applies to income within that range. Earning more doesn't retroactively increase tax on lower income — only the portion above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate.
Which country has the highest income tax?
Among the countries covered, Portugal and France have the highest top marginal rates (48% and 45% respectively). However, effective rates depend on income level and available deductions.
Does this include social contributions?
No, this calculator focuses on income tax only. For a complete picture including social contributions, use our Salary Calculator.
Are deductions and allowances included?
This calculator takes your taxable income as input — after deductions. Apply your country-specific deductions before entering the amount.
