How it Works
The AOW (Algemene Ouderdomswet) is the Dutch state pension. Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands automatically accrues AOW rights. For each insured year you build up 2% of the full benefit, with a maximum of 50 years for 100%.
The amount of your AOW depends on two factors: the number of accrued years and your living situation. Single persons receive approximately €1,380 gross per month in 2025, while cohabiting or married persons receive approximately €948 per person per month. These amounts include holiday allowance.
For expats and people who have lived abroad for a period, it is important to know that each missing year reduces the benefit by 2%. With 10 missing years you receive only 80% of the full AOW.
In some cases it is possible to voluntarily buy back missing years by paying AOW premiums. This can be financially attractive, especially if you expect to live long after reaching AOW age.
